Waverley Council Votes to ‘take The JUMP’
In June this year the executive of Waverley Council formally voted to adopt The JUMP as part of it’s ongoing efforts to reach carbon neutrality.
Waverley is a rural borough in the county of Surrey, and includes the towns of Godalming, Farnham, Haslemere and Cranleigh. The council has been engaging with The JUMP for a number of months to explore how The JUMP can support the council in its efforts to drive down emissions, as well as to engage and empower local citizens and communities to adopt The JUMP.
On the 22nd of June this year the council formally voted to adopt The JUMP. This is because whilst Waverley Borough Council and other tiers of government maintain responsibility for making many of the changes in the Carbon Neutrality Action Plan, to achieve significant reductions in the carbon footprint of the borough individuals and communities can help to make a difference by making some of the six shifts in behaviour.
Specifically the council executive resolved that:
The ‘Take the Jump’ campaign be supported;
Waverley residents be encouraged to ‘take the jump’;
Organisations within the public, private and voluntary sectors operating in Waverley be encouraged to roll out the “Take the Jump” seminar to employees/ members;
Events be organised in Waverley to encourage people to promote the National ‘take the jump’ launch in June; and
A ‘Take the Jump” awareness-raising campaign be organised to inform Waverley staff members and councillors, who will be invited to try making at least one shift in the way that they eat, travel and shop.
This follows high interest in The JUMP amongst community groups within the borough. For instance in July the JUMP’s first street festival event was hosted in Godalming by WhatNext?, a local climate community group. This will be followed by other events and workshops in and around Waverley in the coming months.
