2,300 SCHOOL CHILDREN Take the Jump

Over 2300 year 6 pupils in Surrey have played a Take the Jump game this year as part of the Junior Citizens’ programme.

The children take a morning or afternoon out of school to attend a rolling programme of workshops which promote safety and good citizenship with Take the Jump as one of the key messages.

Central to the workshop is a sorting game, putting statements into categories. How well would you do playing the game? Should ‘Fly to Scotland’ go in the ‘Whoops: this choice increases carbon emissions’ or into the ‘Good travel choices: reducing nitrous oxide and CO2’. You’ve not got long, so talk to somebody else if you don’t know the answer!

The game produced some great conversations with the kids around sharing lifts, reducing meat consumption, fun things to do with minimal carbon emissions, public transport, sharing clothes etc etc.

The workshop started last year in just one Surrey borough (Elmbridge) but this year, with a new team of volunteers all trained and raring to go, we ventured out into an additional borough (Guildford) to spread the word with a new set of pupils, their teachers and families. Next year we hope to take on an additional borough with more new volunteers trained and enthused!

One of our current volunteers said: ‘I think this is the most worthwhile activity that I am involved with, it is highly effective with such a wide reach. And good fun!’ If you are in the Surrey area and you could present a fast-paced session to children, we’d love to hear from you! Diana@oxshottnetzero.org.uk
