Join us for Through the Bottleneck, 11th April in Bristol. A transformative day exploring what’s happening to our world, what will come next, and what we can do practically to respond with resilience and love.

PERFORMANCE - LAUGHTER - GREIF TENDING - DEEP EXPLORATIONS - CONNECTION - LUNCH INCLUDED!

IS THIS YOU?

Wondering "What the hell is GOING ON? Why are there more wars, a collapsing biosphere, rising division, populism and a surging far right, and living standards declining? What's going to happen to my life, family, community and world? Can I do anything for the big picture and those I love?"

If you're feeling this, you're not alone! This workshop is for anyone who's feeling the anxiety and confusion of what's going on in our world today.

What to expect at the event

Held by experts, grief tenders, performers, community organisers, and hopeful humans. This day will offer:

1. Clarity on what is going on in the world and what has led to it, what is likely to happen in the next 10–50 years, and what this means in practical terms for our own lives, families and communities. Mapping the big themes and feedback loops at play in our world, and what they mean for our moment in history. A combination of systems theory and data analysis.

2. Emotional and inner tools to relate to this in a healthy, healing and at times joyous way.

3.Practical steps that can be taken to build individual and community resilience as these changes happen, so we can still live thriving lives, with a toolkit of resources provided to use going forward.

4. A space where we can share how we're feeling, connect with our community and grow networks of support.

5. Poetry, music, performance and delicious food (included in ticket).

This honest day is grounded in a love for and trust in the potential of human nature and spirit. And is firmly focused on a participatory exploration of how we can shepherd the potential future our beautiful natures make possible.

Who's behind it?

This event is hosted by grassroots climate project Take the Jump.

MC

Amber Rose: Through creative events, campaigns and project management I have aimed to tackle a wide variety of social justice issues. I've produced and managed live music events, festivals, grassroots conferences, art installations, protests, and community projects. I have utilised these events to illuminate the issues we face in our society. I've coordinated campaigns, communications and outreach on a variety of areas including migrant solidarity, anti-militarism and environmental issues. I use creativity to make big issues more accessible and reachable, and work to reach these goals in a collaborative and inclusive way.

Workshops holder

Tom Bailey: I've spent 19 years working in the environment space, 9 years in the private sector (Arup) as a sustainability consultant in the UK and China, 6 years as Head of Research and Strategy at a global climate NGO (C40 Cities) in the UK and US, and then left to co-create a charity trying to encourage joyous, science based community action on climate, and bridging the division between people and communities, called Take the Jump. I also led the climate and energy policy development for the Labour Party manifesto at the 2019 election (large parts of which have now been adopted by the current government), and launched a report in parliament with Ed Miliband in 2022 outlining how to eco-retrofit every home in the UK. I am currently working on a polycrisis analysis to try to understand our future trajectory and how we can best respond.

Resilience facilitators

Diana Thornton: I am a Human Givens practitioner and mindful self-compassion teacher.  I began my career as a music therapist and I have over 30 years' professional experience of working with people through life's challenges.  I have been trained by the Human Givens Institute as a therapist and by Bangor University and the Mindfulness in Schools Project as a mindfulness teacher and by the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion as a self-compassion teacher.  I am a graduate of Oxford University where I studied music. I am married with 3 grown-up children.

Jasmine Hayles: Jaz is a wellbeing practitioner and yoga teacher. She works with mindfulness, stress management, communication and connection, breath as my tool, emotional wellness at work, and my mind and me. She is committed to working with racially minoritised communities, as well as the many among us that live with trauma and mental health challenges.

Learning facilitator

Paul Thistlethwaite: Paul is an experienced group and process facilitator and passionate advocate for both sustainability and participatory democracy. He has a background in IT, plus 20 years of driving sustainability in the construction industry. As a freelance consultant he is now supporting change in deliberative democracy and helping projects close to his heart that seek to transform our social systems to make a better world.

Performers

Pete Beader: Pete is a poet, comic and author whose mission is to incite a spirit of carnival, wonderment and riotous love. His live show combines poetry with human-beatbox, stand up poetry and experimental sound poetry. Solo shows often incorporate loop machines and FX machinery, or come in the form of multimedia performance lectures. His last such show – Homer to Hip Hop – appeared over sixty times across the UK.

Performer 2: TBC

THE STORY

Our world seems to be going a bit crazy at the moment right?

So, is our future a binary choice between, one the one hand, "Don't worry everything will be fine, someone 'in charge' will fix all the world's problems", or on the other, "We're all doomed, mass extinction is coming"?

Or is the reality that it will be neither? That the world that's felt cosy for some countries and people for nearly a century, is changing fast in often worrying ways, meaning things aren't gonna be pretty, but eventually there will be another side where a different world be remade? This is the 'Bottleneck' vision of our world today and in the future.

The questions are: What will it be like? How can we reduce the fast growing harm to people and planet? How can we make sure we still live thriving lives amongst the unwelcome changes? And, how to sow seeds for a better world down the line?

Come along to this transformative and unique day event, and let's get some answers together.
